Shades of Yellow: 17 Labradors to Brighten Up Your Day

We think all Labradors are gorgeous. Whether they have a pedigree spanning the generations or are cross-bred with the collie next door, we love them all the same.

Although black, chocolate and yellow are the sole official shades, we all know that Labradors have a vast and wonderful variety of hues.
From white, to fox red and even silver.
Some of these may be controversial, and even argued against or denied as being true Labradors.
But even the staunchest ‘official colours only’ supporter has to admit that the range of colours that come under the heading ‘yellow’ are really something to behold.

Variation in Colour

Yellow Labradors are all classed as yellow, whether they are in fact palest white or darkest fox red.
We have been having a look at some gorgeous examples of this wonderful colour variety.

Labrador Names: Hundreds of Great Ideas to Help You Name Your Dog

Human Names For Labradors It is very popular to give pets so-called human names. All of our family dogs have human names, and always have done. I don’t just extend this rule to the canine members of the house, every other animal we live with also has a human name. Even down to the guineapigs and fish! The nice thing about using a human name for a pet is that it is formal, universally understood and can add to the feeling of their inclusion in your family. The downside of using a human name is it can be harder to get creative, and to be unique. Popular names can be very numerous when out in the world, and it can be frustrating to be one of several people calling the same name in the park. How To Name A Labrador A fun way to choose your Labrador’s name is with a baby names book or website. When we get a new pet I always flick through the lists, throwing out a few suggestions to the family for their approval or rejection. You might find that shorter names, wit...

Pigment in yellow Labradors

First off there are two distinct yellows that have different "genotypes" which means genetic combinations for color. If a yellow Lab has one or two genes that encodes for black then the dog will have black pigment and this pigment can vary in intensity which I will discuss below. If a yellow Lab has two genes that encode for chocolate then the dog will have liver (chocolate) pigment also known as a  "Dudley"  and this can vary from very light flesh colored on a light yellow to a dark brown on a red or dark yellow. These different combinations can arise from various breedings depending on what color the parents are AND what colors they carry. Two blacks bred together for example can produce both black pigmented yellows AND liver pigmented yellows. Here are examples. This first dog is a dark yellow with black pigment. Notice the black around his muzzle and eyerims. His nose has faded to pink due to age. This inevitably happens to most yellows. It is often called ...
